#16 Rocky Horror Picture Show

one of those movies that feel mandatory to watch just because of the influence it had on culture as a whole... i knew shockingly little about the actual plot of it despite how significant it was so im happy to have seen it.

exists as part of a sexual liberation movement where the non-normative gender expression is simultaneously shown as something foreign and alien (quite literally) and yet a fundamentally positive influence on the protagonists which somehow seems lacking in the modern media landscape... rather than being an in-group celebration it feels more like a hand being extended towards people who have never known a world outside of cisgender heterosexuality to show them that an entire world exists outside of those confines.

as a movie itself it feels like its too long and felt bloated with unnecessary additions in the middle segment (sorry. i dont care about the elvis rock and roll guy) despite a runtime of under 2 hours. but in a way it feels like an organic thing developing and not necessarily worried about making sense to a viewer. i could see how it could be a lot more enjoyable watching it multiple times, especially in a group context with the now-codified heckling added in.

i really liked the set and costume design, and the actors themselves seem like they were having a great time performing their roles. especially with frank-n-furter who has the movements and extravagance of a broadway performer who has been putting on the same play for years and can do it in their sleep.
